Manual
handling of loads is present in
most workplaces. This need not be lifting
but also includes any moving of objects
with bodily force. This is a wide definition
and the training package recognises this.
Training is mandatory
under the Health and Safety at Work etc.
Act 1974 as regulation 2(2)c.
HASAWA (1974)
Reg 2(2)c
“The provision
of such information, instruction, training
and supervision as is necessary to ensure,
so far as is reasonably practicable, the
health, safety and welfare of his employees.”
The Manual Handling
Operations Regulations 1992 include
clear duties for employers to eliminate
manual handling as a first action which
is in accordance with the principles of
the hierarchy of control which has the elimination
of the hazard as the first action if this
is possible.
The regulations also require
risk assessments to be carried out on activities
which involve manual handling. The training
includes an introduction of the employee
to the manual handling assessment tool along
with training on good handling technique.
