The basis for the need
to have electrical equipment tested is found
in the “Electricity at Work Regulations
1989” and such testing is to comply
with various areas of this legislation and
the provisions of the Health and Safety
at Work etc. Act 1974.
PAT testing
is the in term used for the periodic testing
and inspection of electrical appliances
which are “portable”. This definition
applies to anything which is not part of
the fixed electrical installation of the
premises. PAT testing is described in detail
in the Institution of Electrical Engineers
publication “Code of Practice for
In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical
Equipment”.
This document gives detailed
guidance on the testing and the frequency
of such testing. The frequency of the testing
depends on the risks from the use of the
equipment. Certain items such as construction
site tools require inspection monthly and
combined inspection and testing every three
months whereas some office equipment only
requires inspecting every two years and
combined inspection and testing every four
years.
From the above it is seen
that the time intervals vary depending on
the equipment and its location of use.
Please do not hesitate
to arrange for a quotation as the costs
vary depending on the number of items to
be tested starting at £ 5.00
per test and reducing to £
2.50 per test if sufficient numbers
of items are present. All items are labelled
and tests are recorded and a test schedule
issued with the re-test date included.
